Public Liability Insurance

Why is cover for Public Liability Insurance important?

When running a business, you may be liable for damages or injuries to another person or property. The likelihood of being sued for negligence is unpredictable and could be costly. At SGIO Insurance, our Public Liability Insurance covers your business against claims for negligent acts, which cause personal injury or property damage.

How much do I need?

This can depend on:

  • A contractual requirement for you to take out a minimum amount of liability cover. For example, if your business is located within a shopping centre (Westfield), a minimum amount of liability cover may be required
  • The potential for your business to cause personal injury and/or property damage to third parties

At SGIO, we have three levels of liability cover (this amount represents your Limit of Liability) to choose from:

  • $5 Million
  • $10 Million
  • $20 Million

We’ve been helping Australians for generations with their business insurance needs. In this time we have found that most customers have selected $10 million as their preferred level of liability cover.

John is on a worksite and leaves behind some tools and equipment. The owner of the worksite walks around to see the progress and trips over one of John’s tools and injures himself. With public and product liability protection, John was able to avoid costly compensation payments and get on with running his business.

John is installing ducted air-conditioning into one of his customer’s homes. While John is running ducts through the ceiling he accidentally steps in the wrong spot and causes a large hole in the ceiling. He also damaged some of his customer’s contents. With public and product liability protection, John was able to avoid having to pay for costs to repair the ceiling and replace the damaged contents.

Retail
Jayne is a florist who owns her own shop within a shopping centre. While watering her display of flowers many of the pots leaked causing some of the water to pool on the tiles in her shop. One of Jayne’s customers accidentally slipped on the wet tiles and injured her knee. With public and product liability protection, Jayne was able to avoid the costly legal fees and compensation payments required and allowed Jayne the pace of mind to get on with running her business.

Domestic Service and Repair
David runs a domestic repair service. With some items David cannot repair them onsite and needs to take them back to his workshop. Overnight, David’s workshop was damaged by storm causing water to enter the premises. Some of the items damaged in the storm belonged to David’s customers. With public and product liability protection David was able to avoid having to meet the cost of replacing the item himself and was able to get on with running his business.
