WA thieves developing taste for technology
08/12/2008
Thieves in WA are now targeting digital cameras, games consoles and MP3 players ahead of more traditional items such as expensive jewellery and watches, according to the latest SGIO data.*
SGIO claims data reveals that other electronic items are also becoming more popular with thieves, including laptops, mobile phones and TVs, but cash, purses, handbags or wallets also remain top targets.
The insurer estimated that household theft costs the WA community around $16 million a year.
According to SGIO State Manager Colin Tierney the modern day thief in WA has shifted their focus.
“Easily portable technology is becoming increasingly targeted such as MP3 players, which now sit at number three on the list. Only two years ago they were ranked at ten."
“Traditionally, thieves have tended to focus on jewellery, but many technological items are now easy to pick up, and can even be put into pockets, allowing a thief to make their get away far more easily.”
Mr Tierney said many electronic items were also easy to sell second hand. However, engraving a driver’s licence number on these types of items could be an invaluable deterrent for thieves.
The revelations come as a timely reminder as Christmas approaches, a time where households tend to spend up big.
“If you’re shopping ahead, don’t leave wrapped gifts on display in your house where thieves looking in may see them” Mr Tierney said.
“After Christmas, it’s best not to leave the packaging of expensive items outside waiting for collection. This only alerts thieves to the types of contents you have in your home. Cut the boxes up and put them in your recycling bin” added Mr Tierney.
